Out and About in Italy

The garden is not just a modern re-creation. Walking its paths gives you the sense of what it was actually like for the wealthy family that lived there so long ago. That is what I love most about walking through European gardens!

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I was quite breath-taken when I saw this garden. All of the flowers were beautiful and all of the leaves on the trees were beginning to turn fall colors. The garden was quiet and peaceful. There wasn't anyone else there at the time, and I could hear the water trickling from the fountain and the birds chirping as they flew high in the sky. I sat in the garden and took in all of this for a while. It was a good break from the hustle and bustle of the cities I had been visiting.

The history of this garden made it a very different experience than any garden I have visited in the U.S. We have many very beautiful gardens in the U.S., but since it is a much younger country than most European countries, it doesn't quite yet have the same amount of history, and much of the architecture is really contemporary. The intricate detail in all of the sculptures and the unique Baroque architecture really stood out to me. Through seeing this, I could get a glimpse of what the culture and style of this place were like when it was first built.

Where does it live?:

This garden is located in Lucca, Italy, in Palazzo Pfanner. The palace dates back to the mid-1600s, so it is quite old and rich in history! It has always been owned by a family of great nobility. The garden was a grand extention of the house grounds, and was used for leisure activities by the family and social events.
