My study abroad journey was life-changing in so many ways. Although my journey was cut in half due to COVID-19, I experienced memories that I will never forget.
Our first stop with Semester at Sea outside of the United States was Japan. Using the advanced metro and train system, I traveled from Hiroshima to Tokyo to Kobe. One of the most notable experiences was visiting the Hiroshima Peace Museum where I learned about the history of the atomic bombing. It was incredible to see how much development the city has experienced within the last century. The culture and growth that they have experienced are incredible.
After Japan, coronavirus was spreading across Asia. Although we were supposed to go to Malaysia and China, our ship diverted to Vietnam instead. We were worried about becoming a cruise ship horror story like other ships were experiencing, Luckily, we were able to safely explore stunning areas like the Mekong River, Ho Chi Minh and the beaches of Da Nang. The vibrant cultures, delicious cuisine and various religions made an incredible stay. We were all screened for coronavirus at stores, airports and to get back on the ship. Luckily, we were able to head out of Asia to Mauritius.
Mauritius was the most beautiful place that I have ever seen. The beaches, rugged mountain range and waterfalls showed the natural beauty of this African island.
