As a clothing designer, we are always looking for ways to solve problems. For example, maybe the current pants you wear to school get caught in your bike chain. I would then think of a solution to the problem, maybe I need to design pants with tighter ends. This is called, "human centered design" which involves finding a need or purpose for the clothing we create.

In order to come up with the best design for clothing, we follow the design process. The process involves identifying a problem like I mentioned above, next sketching design ideas to solve the problem on paper or on the computer, then sewing a sample, and lastly testing that sample on a person to see if it works. It is amazing to see how an idea in your head can be made into something real that can be worn by someone! Can you imagine an item of clothing that you would like to create one day?

Here in France I am learning so much from people who have worked in fashion and in the outdoor industry. Some of the things I am learning in school are: how to draw a realistic looking shoe, how to choose colors that go well together, how to sew waterproof clothing, and how to make and choose fabrics that are best for certain activities.

So, take a moment to look at the shirt you are wearing right now.
