Alisha, Taniya, and Ridhima are three sisters who are my neighbors at my apartment in New Delhi. Alisha is 15 years old and in the ninth grade, while Taniya is 13 years old and in the seventh grade. Both attend the local Government Senior Secondary School nearby. Ridhima is ten years old and attends Navin Public School in the fourth grade.
For breakfast the girls usually eat sabji and paratha. Sabji is a general term for a vegetable dish which can include, potatoes, onion, tomatoes, okra, cauliflower, eggplant and other seasonal vegeatbles. Sabji is usually eaten with the hands by tearing off a piece of thick flatbread called paratha.
Lunch and dinner usually include a sabji dish, a soup-like lentil-based dish called daal, rice and another flatbread called chapati. Ridhima is the picky eater in the family and only eats rice instead of chapati with her meals! Between lunch and dinner, chai (tea) and cookies are served as a snack.
While most meals are vegetable-based, or vegetarian, on some occasions dinner will include a meat dish. Usually this means chicken, but the family also eats fish, mutton and pork.
