Azulejos: Portuguese Tiles

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Since Portugal can be humid, tiles had the advantage of lasting longer than painted walls. In 1755, Lisbon was shaken by an earthquake, which destroyed many buildings and walls. To build back faster, simple tiles were used to cover up damaged walls. Today, fábricas (factories) can be found across Portugal in both big and small cities, producing tiles for citizens and tourists alike!
