Cows, cows, cows!

Introduction:

I heard that your class adopted a cow named Moosky! So, I thought I could talk about how cows are so important to Irish food.

Ireland's food includes a lot of products from cows, including dairy and beef. Today, I'll talk about how cow's milk makes dairy, including the milk we put in our cereal, the cheese that makes a grilled cheese and the butter we put on bread and noodles. I have a picture of cows from my aunt's farm in County Cork at the top of this Field Note so you can see what they look like. It wasn't time to milk or feed the cows when we went to visit, but we got to say hi anyway. My aunt says cows are very nosy. They love to see what people are doing, and they're always looking for food!

What food did I try?:

When I first got to Ireland, I was so excited to see so much cheese in the grocery store. I tried mature cheddar cheese from Irish cows. "Mature" means that the cheese is aged for a long time and has a stronger taste! In Ireland, cheese is used to make grilled cheese, which is called a "toastie" here, baked potatoes and many more things.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I felt so wonderful when I tried a slice of mature cheddar cheese. I always say that cheese from Ireland "tastes like the cow." It tastes like I am right there on the farm when I'm eating it, and I can smell the cows!
