¡Hola! Hello! I’m so excited that you’re participating with me as I spend this next year in Spain. More specifically, I’ll be in the city of Puerto del Rosario, on the island of Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura is part of the Canary Islands (a small archipelago—or group of islands—off the coast of southern Morocco), which is one of Spain’s “autonomous districts” or states. You can think of it like the Hawaii of Spain.
Before we get started on exploring the islands, I want to share a little bit about myself with you. My name is James, and I'm a 22 year old, just-out-of-college, new adult. Originally, I'm from Indiana, but I grew up in LaGrange, North Carolina. I spent the last four years away at college in Northfield, Minnesota, another small town that's about a 19-hour drive from LaGrange. So as you can tell, I’m no stranger to travel.
While I was in school, I studied linguistics (the science of how we learn and use language) and literature, with a focus on their application in elementary literacy education. I am particularly interested in the way that picture books can help students learn how to look at and interact with the world around them in different, kinder ways.
