Our News

What music did I listen to this week?:

On Saturday, my friend and I watched a ballet at the Sydney Opera House. There I enjoyed music by one of my favorite artists, Sufjan Stevens, as one of the pieces performed was choreographed to his work. It was incredible to hear his work performed by a live orchestra, and even better to see it brought to life by the dancers.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

Seeing the ballet! I’ve been looking forward to watching a performance at the Opera House ever since I learned that I was coming to Sydney, and it did not disappoint. I even got to see a work by one of my favorite choreographers, Justin Peck.

What did I read this week?:

I recently started to read The Wasp and the Orchid by Danielle Clode, a biography of the Australian naturalist Edith Coleman. Coleman made major contributions to our understanding of Australian flora and fauna, but her legacy has often gone unnoticed.

What games or sports did I play this week?:

After watching the ballet on Saturday, I was itching to dance! On Sunday I went to an open ballet class held by Sydney Dance Company. They have a beautiful studio in Walsh Bay, an arts precinct located along the harbor.

Other news from this week:

Early in the week, my colleagues and I wrapped up an experiment in the glasshouse where we exposed different Eucalyptus species to a drought and heatwave. Now that we’ve gathered all the data, my next step is to compare what I measured to what different mathematical models predict should happen under a drought and heatwave. Stay tuned to hear how it goes!
