Carnaval celebration, like most celebrations in the Dominican Republic, last all night and into the following morning. When a Dominican says, "¡Vamos a amanecer!", they are saying, "Let's party until sunrise!" which is how anyone should expect to party here.
Carnaval in La Vega is one of the oldest and most exciting celebrations in the Dominican Republic! As such, it shows the city's pride in its history and culture. It began in the 1500s, when Spanish and African traditions mixed together. A long time ago, when another country ruled the Dominican Republic, people were not allowed to celebrate Carnaval. But when the country became independent in 1844, the fun came back -- this time with even more music, color and pride in being Dominican!
During Carnaval, people dress up as special characters with colorful costumes and masks. Some of the most famous ones are:
El Diablo Cojuelo (the Limping Devil): He wears bright clothes, a mask with horns, and carries a soft club made from an animal’s bladder. He lightly hits people to chase away bad luck and negative energy!
Roba la Gallina (Chicken Thief): Usually a man dressed like a woman with big hips and funny clothes. This character walks around joking and pretending to beg for food.
