Carnival Captured in a Clip!

This is the day Belize became its own country, free from British rule. Because of this, Carnival is one of the biggest and most exciting events of the year! Carnival is special because it brings people together from all the different cultures in Belize. It’s a big celebration of pride, unity and heritage. The whole month of September is important in Belize’s history; so, there are lots of street parties, music concerts and cultural shows. Carnival helps kick off all these celebrations and gives everyone a chance to show how proud they are to be Belizean.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Carnival and Jouvert take place in a town in Belize called Orange Walk. People also call it "Sugar City" because a lot of sugar cane grows there -- one of Belize’s most important crops. Orange Walk is also famous for its delicious street tacos! Many families in this town are part of the Mestizo culture, and they make some of the most traditional and authentic tacos in all of Belize. Carnival is held in Orange Walk so everyone can enjoy and celebrate these special cultures and foods.

Carnival also celebrates Belize’s connection to the environment. The food uses local ingredients, the music is inspired by nature and the dances honor history and community. So, Carnival and Jouvert aren’t just about having fun, they also remind everyone to care for the land, plants and people that make Belize so special.
