In Spain, we eat meals at different times than in America. For this meal, we ate lunch around 3:00 pm at a traditional restaurant called Restaurante Lilium in Jaca, Spain. When you enter a restaurant here, they usually have a menu of the day that has three courses: an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. The menu of the day changes because of seasonal produce and ingredients available at the time. It was my first restaurant-style meal in Spain and I’m excited to share it with you!
From the appetizer choices, I tried pisto de verduras con huevo duro (vegetable ratatouille with hard-boiled egg). For the entree, I tried estofado de ternera del pirineo con verduritas (beef stew from the Pyrenees with vegetables). Then, for dessert, I had flan de huevo (egg custard).
I was very excited and hungry to try these foods. Both the appetizer and the entree were soupy dishes with hearty vegetables and meat which made me feel super full and satisfied. I was expecting my food to have a bunch of new foreign flavors, but they were similar to Filipino foods that I grew up with. The food reminded me of home!
