Getting Around in Italy

As long as you bundle up, walking outside isn’t too bad!

How do people get around?:

There’s six major types of public transport vehicle in the city:

Metro: This is the underground subway and goes super fast. There are five different lines in Milan.

Tram: These look like long trains, except they travel on tracks on the same road as cars.

Trolley: There are small trolley cars that travel on the same type of tracks as the trams. They are very historic. The trolleys even have little bells that ding when you stop!

Bus: The bus here looks the same as buses back home. The inner city buses don’t drive on the road with cars. They, instead, drive in adjacent bus lanes. The buses you take to other cities from Milan drive on the road with the other cars.

Regional Train: These trains look like the FrontRunner in Utah. The trains connect you to other parts of Italy and also to other countries!

Shuttle: There’s some shuttle lines that leave from train stations and take you straight to places like the airport.

Driving offers the convenience of getting directly to your destination without having to wait at transport stops or switching lines. However, finding parking in the city can be tricky. There are not very many parking lots, if any at all. This means that cars are either parked on the side of the road or a few blocks away in the nearest underground parking. As a result, a lot of people prefer to use the metro to commute to work.
