How to Travel Through Mozambique

Because passengers are typically loaded in the back without seat belts or restraints, this method of transportation can be quite dangerous.

Motorcycles, or motas, are considered to be the most popular taxi service to many residents living in the rural and city areas alike. At times, this is the only form of transportation able to navigate narrow areas such as residential zones and city side streets. Motas are also the cheapest method of public transportation.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

After sampling all methods, I'd say my preferred method of transportation is by chapa. While a ride typically involves you holding your neighbor's chicken or baby, chapas are often the only transportation option for traveling shorter distances. The community atmosphere doesn't hurt, either!

While it was an adventure, I couldn't recommend traveling by open-back chapa because it is considered the number one cause of vehicle accidents in Mozambique.

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Often, the transportation method is dictated by the terrain and access to the particular site. In my community, roads are often not paved and can be quite narrow. Bicycles and motorcycles are often the only options in addition to walking. If a path is submerged by water, the path may be unsuitable for vehicles altogether, leading residents to travel long distances by foot.
