Due to Bahía Blanca's importance in Argentina's economy, there is a high need for jobs in the oil and agricultural industry, as well as in the export industry. This is very beneficial to the people who live here because it gives them opporunties in employment for jobs that they for trained in college. Without job opportunities, it would be harder for citizens of Bahía Blanca to afford the costs of living and to provide for their families. According to data from 2010, Bahía Blanca (compared to other cities in Argentina) is well off in terms of income per capita, which means that a majority of households in the city earn more (or better) income than households from other cities in the country. This data list Bahía Blanca as one of the top 13 out of 32 cities with the best income per capita.
Due to the prevalance of petroleum companies that send exports out of the port, pollution affects the citizens here, especially those living closer to the main port, Ingeniero White. There is a petroleum company here called Sermat that produces a lot of toxic fumes that may pose a threat to the futures of families here in Bahía Blanca. I have read that there are often explosions at the production plant and that the company does not always advise workers or citizens of what has happened. The challenges of living in an industrial city are usually environmental.
