Swabian Maultaschen

How did I feel when I tried it?:

The regular Maultaschen tastes great! The texture feels like a well seasoned meatball inside of a dumpling. I could taste the layer of seasonings with meat and vegetables together. There were many flavors in my mouth but no conflict in taste. The vegetarian Maultaschen tastes like a mushroom and cheese filled ravioli, but instead of cheese filling, they just put more vegetables inside such as ground carrot and spinach.

How is the food prepared?:

There are two ways to prepare this food: one way is to serve it in broth like a soup dumpling; another way is to  dress the Maultaschen with a creamy sauce and serve it as the main dish. In order to make the Maultaschen you first have to make a dough. You then need to cut the dough into square shapes. Then you need to make the filling. There is ground pork (vegetarians can do without the meat) and eggs, heavy cream, seasonings, some minced vegetables, salt and black pepper. To make the dumpling you put a spoonful of filling on a square shaped dough and then place another piece of dough on top. You then press the edges firmly together, making one Maultaschen!

Is this food connected to the local environment? How?:

Germany is famous for its sausages: there is no doubbt about that. One thing that surprised me is how much Germans care about climate change and the environment. There is data from 2014 showing that there are seven million vegetarians living in Germany. With the new government that came into power in 2021, there are even more people who want to protect the environment.
