Situated in southern Spain, the people of Granada rely on natural resources from the Sierra Nevada mountains for water, shelter and nutrient-rich soil in the valleys. Two regions of Granada, in the east and west, are quite different from one another and affect the way people live in each area.
Spain is the second-most mountainous region in Europe, behind Switzerland, and Granada is located in the largest mountain range in Spain, the Sierra Nevada mountains. This mountain range is the main reason why Granada's daily weather is unpredictable. For instance, it is possible for there to be a thirty degree Fahrenheit variation in temperature over the course of a single day!
The vital part of Granada's natural environment to the people who live is the Sierra Nevada mountain range. In the western region of Granada, the soil is very fertile because the land lies in a valley that is at the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, and as the snow from winter melts during the spring, crop fields are provided with plentiful water. The eastern region of Granada, it is more mountainous than the west, and the land is not suitable for farming. So this is where the majority of the population lives.
