With Israel so closely intertwined with the Jewish religion and tradition, the whole country functions under the practice of Shabbat. It is safe to say that the environment of Israel has evolved to include the practice of Shabbat. Outside of this, the meal welcoming Shabbat highlights the beauty of the food available; the challah bread is blessed before the meal, and so is the wine or grape juice. These actions encourage respect and reflection on what the Sabbath means in a religious sense, but it also highlights what is available to enjoy and celebrate in life, including food, family and friends.
