Some call it the “Serbian Mount Athos” nicknamed after a famous holy mountain in Greece!
The steep cliffs of the gorge are home to many birds like falcons, eagles, ravens, and egrets. We saw some birds flying overhead really far away, and we think it was a peregrine falcon. The gorge is home to over 150 bird species and other animals like otters, wild cats, and colorful salamanders.
However, my favorite animal from the hike was my friend’s dog Lucky. He is an Italian dog and one of the best truffle hunters! Truffles are a type of mushroom that grows in places like Italy and Croatia and is used in fancy foods like pasta or sauces. Lucky is a mountain dog and was so much better at hiking than all of us!
Have you been hiking before? What is your favorite thing to do outside or in nature?
