It's a Train! It's a Bus! It's a Trolley! It's Public Transportation in Lisbon!

Introduction:

Having lived in the Western region of the United States all my my life, I am used to traveling, almost exclusively, by car. That is not the case in many parts of Europe, especially not in the city of Lisbon!

How do people get around?:

Lisbon is a big city, and mostly people get around using public transportation. This means they take the bus, subway, train, trolley and even a ferry! Many people have cars, but the traffic can get super bad and parking is often a nightmare in Lisbon. But the buses and subways are cheap and easy to use within the city, and there are many trains and ferries to take you outside of the city or across the Tagus River into other parts of Portugal.

It costs around two euros ($2.10) to ride the bus or subway, here, but you can also buy a pass for about 30 euros a month ($32) to use public transportation as much as you want. Lisbon is also famous for its yellow trolleys (similar to the trolleys in San Francisco) that weave through the winding streets and up the steep hills. These trolleys are usually packed with tourists, so the locals tend to take either the subway or a bus. Or there is always good old-fashioned walking!
