The dumplings are pretty heavy, but they're the perfect side for many Czech meals which come served with lots of delicious sauce that you can use the dumplings to soak up.
Now when I see Knedlíky on the menu of a restaurant or on the lunch schedule at my school canteen (cafeteria), I get excited as they have become a kind of comfort food that I look forward to.
Knedlíky are pretty simple to prepare, and only require a few ingredients. The main ingredients are flour, milk, egg, yeast, and sugar.
First, you have to activate the yeast. You can do this by combining sugar, yeast, and some lukewarm milk and letting it sit in a warm place for about 15 minutes. After activating the yeast, you add one egg to the mixture and whisk. Then, you add flour, salt, and your yeast mixture to a mixing bowl.
Once combined, you knead the dough and form your loaf. While kneading, you can begin to bring a pot of water with salt to a boil. When the water begins to bubble, you put your loaf into the boiling water and allow it to boil for about 20 minutes, flipping it halfway through.
Finally, you remove the loaf from the pot and prick it with a fork a few times to release the steam (as this helps make the Knedlíky extra fluffy). Now, you can slice the Knedlíky and serve with meat, soup, or any main dish.
