Maria's Life in Greece

I have two children, both daughters. Our girls are grown up now, and both have left Greece for work (one lives in London, and the other in New York), but we stay in touch regularly. It's funny now to see them having left and wishing to remain close with family back here in Greece, because I went through much the same thing. Additionally, I have four siblings - and my husband has five! - so there are many in-laws and nieces and nephews about.

How do you get around?:

I typically drive, although - as is no secret - the traffic in Athens can be a nightmare. Sometimes, I will use the subway, which can actually be quicker if I need to get across town. I suppose it all depends on where I'm going and when I need to get there. I am notoriously late to most things, anyway!

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

I tend to keep it simple and to wear lighter clothing. Cotton is a favorite here. The weather doesn't get nearly as cold as it does elsewhere, so layering up is less of a concern. Workplace attire is far more relaxed than it is in the United States, as you can see by the number of teachers who come to school in jeans!

What do you like to do in your free time?:

I'm an English teacher, so naturally I have to say that I do a lot of reading. But I also enjoy baking, particularly koulouri (a type of Greek bread, similar to pretzels) and other traditional Greek treats.

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I primarily speak Greek and English, with a little French sprinkled in.
