From AVID to Abroad: How to Fund Your College Journey

Journal Entry:

In preparation for our next Zoom call, I wanted to update you on scholarship opportunities and tips. Now, not every scholarship or tip may apply to you, but I hope you can learn at least one thing!

Let’s start with The Gilman Scholarship, which is how I’m connected to you all right now! If you’re Pell Grant eligible and interested in studying abroad during college, this is the scholarship to know. Gilman supports students who might not get the chance to travel, especially first-generation students, students of color and those with financial need. The Gilman covers up to $5,000, and you can even get more $ if you study a critical language, like Mandarin or Arabic. What they don’t tell you, is that Gilman isn’t just about academics: they also care about your goals, your community and your story. So, it helps to be a well-rounded college student who participates in extracurriculars, volunteer work or internships.

Another opportunity to explore is the Bonner Program, which offers a four-year scholarship and internship for students who are passionate about service and leadership. Bonner students commit to meaningful community work during college and get mentorship, professional development, a non-profit internship and a strong support network in return.
