Gran Canaria is a place full of life, color and excitement, and nothing captures this energy more than Carnaval! Every year, people from all over the Canary Islands—and the world—come to join the celebrations. But Carnaval isn’t just about music and dancing. It’s a tradition deeply connected to the island’s history and culture. Let’s dive into what makes Carnaval in Gran Canaria so special!
Carnaval is one of the biggest and most exciting celebrations in Gran Canaria. It happens every year in February or March, leading up to Lent. For many Christians around the world, Lent is a 40-day period of fasting, reflection and preparation for Easter. However, before Lent begins, the streets of Gran Canaria come alive with bright costumes, music, parades and performances for Carnaval! One of the highlights is the Cabalgata, a grand parade where people in colorful outfits throw confetti and dance through the streets.
During Carnaval, everyone dresses in elaborate costumes, similar to how people dress up for Halloween in the U.S.
