Simply, the community needs an alternate means of transportation and other ways to get around without a motorbike. However, today, there are few options beyond the local bus.
I am here in Vietnam to research how to make public transportation functional in Ho Chi Minh City. One of the most significant challenges in developing public transportation, especially train projects, is high costs. To complete the 8 train lines that Ho Chi Minh City is looking to build, they will need at least $26 billion. This is a massive amount of money for a country that is recognized by the World Bank as "lower-middle income." So today, I am supporting the larger effort to find the financial tools needed to build the rest of the metro. Some days I'm not sure how successful their efforts will be, but I am optimistic that Ho Chi Minh City will find a way to unite motorbikes and public transportation into a system that is more environmentally friendly, accessible and safe.
