Environment: Sun, Spiders and Sustainability

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

One of the biggest challenges is the dangers of over-exposure to sunlight. It only takes 15 minutes to get a sunburn sometimes, and the rates of skin cancer are much higher in Australia. Sunscreen is a must. There are also major challenges with coastal erosion, which is often caused by rising sea levels and causes land loss. Similar to Louisiana's coast, Sydney could lose vital parts of the city if there is too much erosion. Some of Australia's famous wildlife also poses threats to Sydneysiders. For example, the deadly box jellyfish has been spotted on beach fronts. Plus, there are sharks, snakes and spiders! Even the birds here are agressive and one stole my friend's lunch this week!

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

The adaptations to this environment are impressive! First of all, Sydney has developed a very impressive (and famous) harbor to help residents travel across the river and beyond. I took one of the ferries this week to go to Manly Beach! Additionally, Australia makes its own suncreen, which has a more effective chemical combination than other countries. The sales contribute to cancer research, too. The most impressive adaptation is their sustainability culture. Every house that I've walked past has recycling, foodwaste, and a general waste bin, which is a huge contrast to the culture around waste in New Orleans. Here is a video about their recycling efforts!
