Meet Meryum!

until 6:30p.m.  This is the normal schedule, but if the class is cancelled, we don't have to go to school.  Some days of the week I have every class, but other days of the week I only go to school half the day.  I keep my schedule taped on the front door of my house so that my mom knows where I am and so that I don't forget when I have classes.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

My school is only a five minute walk from my house, so I always walk.  I am allowed to go by myself, but I usually walk with my brother and sister because my mom does not want them to walk alone.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I eat lunch at home with my family most of the time, but sometimes my mom gives me a little money to get a sandwich with my friends during lunch time.  There is a small snack shop near the school where we can pick up a sandwich.  It's just bread with eggs, lunch meat, olives and sauce.  I like that sandwich, but my favorite food is herrira, which is a soup made with tomatos, chickpeas, meat and spices.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

In school we speak Arabic.  To say hello, we say salaam alekum, which means literally "peace be upon you all".

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

There are many girls named Meryum at my school, like me, but some of my friends are named Malak, Aya, Fatima and Karima.  A lot of boys are named Mohammad, Ayman, Youseff or Brahim.
