From my University dorm to the nearest subway station, I have to travel through a maze-like neighborhood which can be tricky to navigate. My mechanism to remember the way back is to pay attention to specific landmarks like cafes or building roof colors.
The most interesting place that I visited this week would have to be the Hongdae area in Seoul. Most people would describe this area as the hipster part of Seoul because it's where the local artists hang out. Hongdae is lined with street performances from local talent, featuring everything from dance groups to singers to magicians. As you shop for clothes, you can find crowds of people surrounding exciting performances. My favorite performance that I saw so far would have to be the one with two musicians singing a cover of One Call Away by Charlie Puth with their guitars. There's always something interesting to see in Hongdae!
The subway stations have this specific jingle they play every time the subway approaches. On the subway, I was told that this melody is based on the tune that the Korean army wakes up to every day. Also, the subway is easy to navigate because each line has a different color and there's an app that constantly updates each arrival time. What's been extremely helpful about the stations is that announcements are made in both Korean and English.
