It is not something I would personally condone, as I prefer to support myself and disagree with gender division, but culturally this is important here. Showing others that you can afford expensive meals and drinks is a way to prove that you have achieved high social status and can easily spend lots on leisure activities. Do you know of any similar cultural practices in the U.S.?
