Navigating China's Transit

Introduction:

Let's explore the different means of getting around one by one:

Bikes - There are all types of motorbikes in the city that locals use to get around. If you order food, the delivery people use motorbikes to ride over to you. You can see these bikes all over. You can see them parked on the sidewalks or speeding on the road, sometimes speeding on the sidewalk too, so watch out! In addition to motorcycles, there are tons of pedal bikes parked on street corners and outside buildings. The majority of these are shared bikes and people can use mobile apps such as Alipay or Wechat to pay for the time that they use the bike. Most of these ride-sharing bikes are blue and white and some are yellow or orange. It costs about 2 renminbi (Chinese currency, also referred to as "RMB") per ride, or only 28 cents in U.S. dollars (USD).

Taxis - Using a taxi in Shanghai can be complicated compared to other means of transport. It is not likely that the driver will know English, there might not be any available cabs in your area and the drivers may not take the most direct route to get you to your destination in a timely fashion. Often, as a foreigner, you are at a disadvantage because of the language barrier and your unfamiliarity with the area. This can lead to drivers taking longer routes through the big city in order to get a higher cab fare.
