They all have different stories, dreams and desires for the future. One of my roomates, for example, is from Colombia and is studying a certificate in business. Another of my roomates works as a contract worker for a Spanish company and is awaiting Spanish citizenship. If you are an explorer by nature or are open to new experiences, especially in a different language context, doing a Fulbright grant might be just right for you. There are Fulbrights in more than 160 different countries! The grants are given out by the State Department which is located in Washington, DC.
One of my favorite parts of being a Fulbright in Spain is getting to see more of the country and getting to talk to Spanish people. Places like A Coruna, Gijon and Valencia are wonderful places that show how different and diverse Spain can be. Valencia is a hot beach town on the coast in the South closer to Barcelona while A Coruna and Gijon are cooler, rainy cities in the North coast that have a different language and the oldest Camino de Santiago.
How can you become a Fulbright grantee?
Well, first you must finish high school and then college! However, what you do in college will matter as your grades and experiences will help you figure out what you want to do in the future. Armed with these ideas, you should go on the Fulbright website and look for opportunities in countries that interest you. Not only that, look for opportunities to do things that you are interested in. If you have the chance to study abroad in college, do it! It will give you the opportunity to figure out if you like living far away for your family and if you would like to do that for a longer period of time.
