Food in Argentina

Introduction:

Argentina is famous for its beef, the main course of the asado. (Go see my latest journal for more about this!) However, there are so many other meals to enjoy as well! One popular meal is a milanesa. This is a pounded, fried piece of meat, similar to a schnitzel, if you are familiar with German food. You can easily buy beef or chicken milanesas at a restaurant or go to the local butcher and buy the cuts of meat and make your own with breadcrumbs. They are usually served with a side of mashed potatoes, French fries or a salad. For my vegetarian friends, there are also eggplant milanesas, which I have made at home!

Another popular meat is choripanChoripan is a name that tells you exactly what you are about to eat: chorizo y pan (sausage and bread). Choripan is classic street food in Buenos Aires. On the weekends, I used to go out and explore a new section of the city, and while I was walking I would look for someone selling these sandwiches. There is nothing better than having someone hand you a crunchy roll stuffed with a juicy sausage fresh off the grill smothering it with chimichurri. Chimichurri is a sauce that has herbs and spices such as oregano, parsley, garlic and red pepper flakes, all mixed with oil and vinegar.
