I found the spice bag warm and comforting, as the chips are like thick cut fries, deep fried to perfection, just like you might eat in the USA, but mixed with onions, peppers, and lots of spices. The curry sauce is mild and spiced, and has the consistency of gravy. It reminds me of Japanese golden curry. The Satay sauce is a peanut based sauce, which is slightly sweet. Satay sauce is delicious and it originates in Southeast Asia. Since Ireland is a country with many immigrants, it has food influences from all over the world.
The spice bag is made up of fried chicken (or tofu), fried chips, and then sautéed with onions and peppers with a spice mix. It can be eaten dry or with sauce. It's so tasty!
The dillisk I purchased is dried, so it needed to be soaked in water for ten minutes (to rehydrate it), washed, and then baked with a bit of oil in the oven to make it crispy, like chips (but in Ireland, they call them "crisps" and not chips). However, I prepared it a different way, which is more familiar to me, and made it into a light soup.
Potatoes and chicken are widely available in Ireland. Historically, potatoes are a staple crop in Ireland as they grow easily in the damp and cold climate, and have at times been the main source of food.
Potato History lesson: During an event popularly known as the Great Famine, or the Irish Potato Famine, while 4 million people in Ireland were relying on the potato for food, a fungus took root in the potatoes and decimated the crop.
