The fireworks lit off during Diwali are extremely harmful to the environment, and Delhi especially has very poor air quality with high levels of pollutants. Last year, the number of fireworks lit off in Delhi during the festival forced the city to close schools for a few days because it was too dangerous to breathe in the air outside.
