Nature News

One of my lifelong dreams has been to see the northern lights. This was my first trip to the Arctic, and I knew I had a chance to finally see the northern lights.

Two nights ago, the Captain came on the PA system at 2:00 AM and told everyone that the northern lights were starting in the night sky! I was so excited! I ran outside, but I didn't see anything. I was freezing and tired, so I went back to bed after 30 minutes.

Last night, I knew I had one more chance. There had been clear skies at sunset, so I thought to myself, “This is it.” I watched from the deck and from my window until midnight, but I did not see anything. I got ready for bed, but then I looked outside one more time. There they were! The sky was starting to look like skim milk had been spilled over parts of it.

I ran outside in my flannel pajamas and socks. I was so excited! This was a mistake because it was about 29° Fahrenheit outside. I ran back and got on my snow pants and gear. This time, I took my phone with me.

Did you know that a camera can “see” the northern lights’ colors much better than the naked eye?
When I got outside with my camera, I could not believe it. I stayed outside for more than two hours, watching the northern lights with my new friends. I still feel filled up with joy to have finally seen the northern lights!
