Le Commandant Charcot, a Polar Class 2 Ice-Breaker Passenger Ship

Introduction:

Hi again, it’s Heather! I am so excited to be on board PONANT’s Le Commandant Charcot! I am spending 11 days on board this very special ship. I have never been on a ship like this before in my whole life. I have had an amazing time discovering this ship so far. Let’s learn more about Le Commandant Charcot!

Did you know that when you are talking about a ship, you use the term “she” and “her” to describe the ship? Let’s learn more!

How do people get around?:

A French company called PONANT owns and operates Le Commandant Charcot, and she is one-of-a-kind. Le Commandant Charcot is 492 feet long. Her beam, or width across her widest part, is 92 feet. Her draft, or the part of the ship that is always underwater, is 33 feet. She was built in Sovik, Norway.

Le Commandant Charcot is the very first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration ship, and she is powered by liquified natural gas. Have you heard of the terms “hybrid” and “hybrid electric?” You might have heard those words used to describe scooters, cars, and trucks. I think it is fantastic that PONANT built a ship that uses environmentally-friendly fuel systems and battery systems.

Le Commandant Charcot has 123 suites and staterooms with private balconies or terraces. In total, 245 guests can go on board each cruise.
