






The fishballs can be eaten in many ways, but when I ate them in the onabe, I boiled the broth with a bunch of different ingredients (including the fish balls) and then ate it nice and hot! The nice thing about onabe is that, even when you eat all of the stuff you put into the soup, if there is broth left, then you can simply put more ingredients into it and boil it and then you have another serving!
In the case of seafood, it is connected to the local environment! Just like Hawai’i, Japan is also an island state, which means that it is surrounded by the ocean. Because of this, fishing and getting food from the ocean is a practice that goes back thousands of years. Seafood is very important in Japanese food, and you’ll find that many of the common foods here have seafood in them!
