Historic Restoration in Medellin

Introduction:

As I explore different neighborhoods of Medellin, I have noticed distinct building styles and sizes. In the commercial centers of El Centro and El Poblado, you can find tall skyscrapers and large office buildings in modern styles similar to those you might see in New York City. The neighborhood I live in, Laureles, however, is more residential, with brick apartment buildings and smaller shops located along tree-lined streets.

Yet, I have also found hidden historical gems in the area around El Centro, including the old 1920s-style neighborhood of El Prado, as well as a variety of old churches and official state buildings, most of which remain either overlooked or situated alongside much more modern architecture. Although Medellín's city government has preserved some historic buildings, like the Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral) and the Museum of Antioquia, other historic sites lack sufficient attention from city officials. This is especially true in the El Prado neighborhood, where there are many beautifully-designed and colorful old homes from the early 1900s.

What community need did I learn about?:

I took a walk around the El Prado neighborhood, established in 1926, with my friends Tamra and Songhee.
