Traveler Bio

Did you join the 2022 virtual exchange program with the HMS Oardacious team (https://www.reachtheworld.org/hms-oardacious) that successfully rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in a record-breaking 35 days, 17 hours and 19 minutes?

This year, Reach the World is proud to partner with the 2024 HMS Oardacious team – the all-female Valkyries – for another record-seeking endeavor! Beginning in December, the Valkyries will set out from San Sebastien de la Gomera in Spain’s Canary Islands and attempt to set a new world record for the first and fastest all-female serving military team to row across any ocean – and you’re invited to join the journey!

The Valkyries will row in shifts of two hours on, two hours off, all day (every day) for over a month to complete the daunting task of crossing an entire ocean under their own power. As they deal with salt sores, blisters, sleep deprivation, sea sickness, 40-foot waves and scorching tropical sunshine, they will raise awareness around mental health, self-care, women in STEM fields, and perseverance.

Valkyries team members are:

  • Izzy Rawlinson (Skipper) –Marine Engineering Submariner
  • Ali Aindow – Mine Clearance Diver
  • Aaby Aldridge – Survival Equipment Technician
  • Lily-Mae Fisher – Pilot
  • Nic Hall – Warfare
  • Alex Kelley (Team Manager) – Merlin Helicopter Observer

Your students will get to know this inspirational team of Royal Navy Submariners through regular student-friendly articles, media straight from the Atlantic Ocean, and several video call opportunities where students can ask their questions directly to team members. Don’t miss the excitement this winter!
