Life in a rowing boat has its ups and downs. One of the best things is being in the middle of nowhere, with no noise, no hustle and bustle. Just a simple life of row, eat and sleep. We have found it a great time to step back from our busy day-to-day lives and reflect on what is really important to us. Out here, it makes us appreciate just how lucky we are to be doing this. Yes, it is hard, but also a fantastic experience. Not many people get to dive off into the deep ocean, share their boat with flying fish and see dolphins in their natural environment. We finally saw some dolphins. Well, we sent the pictures back to the team who did some fin recognition for us, are they whales or dolphins? Turns out the ocean mammal “experts” back home confirmed they were not pilot whales but Atlantic bottlenose dolphins.
The dolphins were dark grey in color, with a bit of a bulge on the top of their head with a small beak or mouth. Pilot whales have a bigger bulge and smaller faces. They are one to two meters in length with different fins. Some fins are quite long and straight, while others are a bit smaller and floppy.
