Through ESS, I’ve made meaningful friendships that required me to adapt to Japan’s relationship dynamics and cultural customs. I’ve had to be more patient and understanding, and my efforts have paid off—each connection has been meaningful. Furthermore, through this club I was able to experience an izakaya.
Prior to entering our private room at the izakaya, I had to take off my shoes. I soon discovered that dining at an izakaya involves enjoying different courses at different times. I remember eagerly wanting to order dessert, only to have a Japanese friend kindly explain that it wasn’t the right moment yet. Then there was the time I tried to pick up the tamagoyaki with my chopsticks—I was gently corrected and told that I should cut off a smaller piece instead of picking up the whole slice. Silly me!
Nevertheless, moments like these helped me feel more connected and integrated into Japanese society.
10. Would you recommend this circle to other international students? Why or why not?
Of course! ESS Club is incredibly inclusive. What’s kept me coming back isn’t just the activities—it’s the people! So, if you're reading this and decide to study abroad at Doshisha University in the future, be sure to join this club. You won't regret it!
