Interview With My Host Mother, Zubida

How do you get around?:

I get around through the use of my oldest son's car or I take a taxi or tram. I also walk a lot because it is a good form of exercise.

What types of clothing do you like to wear?:

I like to wear traditional Moroccan clothes called djellaba, but mainly I wear modest clothes that you could find in America. I prefer comfort over fashion!

What do you like to do in your free time?:

In my free time, I like to see friends and family. I like to listen to music and the radio when I am not doing things around the house. Once a month, I organize a get together with family and friends. We get together on Friday and eat couscous, a traditional Moroccan dish.

What language(s) do you speak? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

I speak four languages: Moroccan Arabic, Tamazight (indigenous language of Morocco), French and English. I grew up speaking Arabic and Tamazight in my home, but later, I picked up French and English in school.  In Arabic, we say As-salāmu ʿalaykum (السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ) which means "Peace be upon you." We also say Salam for a short way to say Hello.

Do you have pets?:

I have a pet cat named Lucy, named after the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." She was a stray that we found on the street and took her in.

Have you traveled? Where have you traveled to?:

I have traveled to France and seen most of Morocco. It is hard for Morrocans to travel to many countries outside of Morocco because of the need for travel visas.
