Fridays are a very special day for Moroccans because It is the day of prayer where people gather and commune. Every Friday, Morrocan families all over the country cook the traditional dish of couscous. You may have heard of couscous; it's a grain similar to rice that is steamed until it is tender and served with meat and spices. It is an extremely tasty dish that everyone looks forward to eating every Friday!
I learned about eating couscous on Fridays from my host family. Every Friday, we gather around the dinner table and share this special meal. Traditionally, you are supposed to eat it with your hands, but they let me eat it with a spoon because I am not good at eating food with my hands. It is a very special meal because it allows for people to gather and reflect on life's events during the previous week.
The community has this tradition because Fridays are important for people in the Islamic world. Friday is the day of prayer very similar to Sundays for Christians. It is the day in which people go to their mosque to pray. People prepare couscous on Fridays because it is a dish that is easily shared, and they invite all of their friends and family over after attending prayers at the mosque.
