Introduction and Wedding Ceremonies in Uganda

Introduction:

Uganda has many traditions. One popular tradition is an introduction ceremony and wedding. Traditional introduction ceremonies and weddings bring families and couples together. These big events happen almost every day in different parts of Uganda. Each part has their own version.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about introduction ceremonies and weddings. I have been to these ceremonies in person, too. My host family owns a decorating business, so I have also helped decorate and set up these special events for local Ugandans. An introduction ceremony happens first. This is where the man (groom) and his family visits the woman (bride) and her family at her house. The two families meet each other, which is why this ceremony is called an introduction.

An introduction ceremony must happen before a couple can legally be married. Weddings in Uganda are similar to weddings in the U.S. Brides in Uganda wear white dresses, just like most brides in the U.S. Grooms in Uganda also wear suits and ties, just like most grooms in the U.S. Female guests will wear kitenge (patterned) dresses, and male guests will wear a kanzu. There are even bridesmaids and groomsmen in Uganda, similar to the U.S., but the maid of honor and best men are different.
