By reading back through the many layers of muds and rocks, scientists on the ship and in laboratories can learn things like how many times the volcanoes exploded and how big those eruptions were. They can find out more about what triggered the explosions, too, so that they can predict future eruptions and help people on the islands evacuate in time to stay safe.
