In my first few months living in Northern Ireland, I was excited to start trying traditional Irish foods. I expected dishes with bread and potatoes to be common here, and they are! From breakfast to dinner, potatoes are used in all sorts of ways in Irish recipes. To introduce myself to their cuisine, I thought, what better way to start than with the most important meal of the day?
To begin my journey into the Irish menu, I ate a traditional Irish breakfast, or "fry up!" I also tried a traditional "Sunday roast," as well as a basic staple-- a toastie! This Field Note explores the fry up, but be sure to take a look at the pictures to see my other meals!
I felt fulfilled by the mix of food groups in the breakfast, and it was tasty too! I prefer savory breakfasts which is definitely the norm here.
A fry up is prepared by cooking all the ingredients in one frying pan, including meat, vegetables, eggs and bread! I don’t eat pork, so I wasn’t able to eat my fry up exactly as it usually is made. Normally, it will contain back bacon, sausage and sometimes black pudding. Black pudding is a type of sausage made with pork or beef blood, pork fat and some kind of grain, oats or otherwise!
