Poland's Easter Traditions

Did you know painting Easter eggs is a Slavic tradition that goes back over 5,000 years?

Finally, on Easter Sunday, the real celebrations begin. Poles will go to church and have their Easter baskets blessed by priests. After church, Polish people will eat all kinds of sweets, ice cream and other fun foods. They'll also go to the Easter market and buy ornaments, nicknacks and even more food!

But, it doesn't end on Easter Sunday. Poland also celebrates Easter Monday. On this day, people will throw water on each other for good luck and to symbolize the Christian practice of baptism. They even nickname this day, "Wet Monday."

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Poland is one of the most Catholic countries in the world! It even has over 10,000 churches! Easter is very important to Christians. To them, Easter symbolizes their God defeating the evils of the world and saving the Christians for the rest of time. Having over 80% of its people being Christian, Poland goes all-out for this special holiday.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Easter occurs right as the spring season comes in. Given this, Easter is also symbolic of the coming of spring. This is why many symbols of Easter - like palms and eggs - are also symbols of spring. Spring also shares similarities with the rising of Christ. Just as Christ came back from the dead, trees and plants seem to come back to life too in this season.
