This is when I realized I found buildings fascinating and wanted to study civil engineering. I wanted to understand how people could build such different homes. Once I graduated college as a civil engineer, I wanted to move to another country and volunteer my time — while also learning about another culture and language.
I decided to join the Peace Corps and moved to southern Peru. My job here will last two years. While living here I have learned to speak Spanish, and I also live with a Peruvian family. I teach kids in school about the environment, and how we can help protect our environment, which includes plants, animals, and water. One thing many of us have in our homes in the United States is running water. However, here in Peru, many people do not have access to clean drinking water. Some people only get water in their homes two days a week, and they have to boil the water to kill all the germs to make it safe to drink. I work with small communities to help them have better access to clean drinking water.
I am looking forward to sharing more about my life here in Peru, my work, and all the amazing adventures I have been on here! Everything is so different, from the food, transportation, language, celebrations, and much more. I am beyond excited to share those experiences with you! Stay tuned.
