Vegemite and meat pies are two foods connected to the Australian environment. These two are the most iconic foods in Australia and are connected to the country's culture and history.
Meat pies in Australia are considered a national dish, as Australians usually consume about 270 million meat pies annually. This may not sound impressive until we realize the Australian population is only about 27 million! This would mean that every year, one Australian would have to eat 10 meat pies yearly! This dish has become popular because of how convenient and portable this meal can be, and it is now present in Australian culture and available at every sporting/public event.
Additionaly, vegemite produces a sense of nostalgia and cultural pride in Australians and is a good source of vitamin B. It was developed in Melbourne, Victoria, in 1922 in response to a shortage of the popular British yeast spread called Marmite. Because of this shortage, Vegemite was invented and would be known as one of the foods that "tastes like Australia", having a special place in Australians' hearts.
