






As part of Spain, the Canary Islands' official language is Spanish. People here also often speak some English or German, and there are many immigrants who speak Arabic or another language from their native countries, like Wolof—a language from Senegal—or Italian.
Like in most of Europe, we use the euro in Spain. One U.S. dollar is worth about 0.91 euro right now.
People here generally don't buy bottles of water like we do in the U.S. Instead, each week I buy an 8 liter (about 2 gallon) jug of water for 0.86 euro, or about $0.94.
My best meal this week was a huge salad I made the day I moved into my new apartment! It had lettuce, mushrooms, carrots and spinach. For dessert I had gofio (an enriched flour mixture popular here on the island) with banana.
This weekend there is going to be a free concert as part of the island’s Fiestas de Rosario (Festivals of Rosario) celebrating Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the island’s patron saint. The headliner is Orishas, a Cuban rap group, so I've been listening to their music.
