Delphine's Day: A Kid's Life in Togo

What chores do you have at home?:

I have to fetch water from the pump. Whenever my mother asks, I have to take the basin and go to the water pump to fill it up, even if it’s really hot out. In the evenings, my mother and father go with me and also fetch water. I also have to sweep the rooms and the courtyard every morning. I am learning to cook from my mother. Sometimes I have to cook for the whole family.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My father is a farmer. My mother sells fried tofu. She makes the tofu from soy beans from our fields. She brings the fresh tofu to the neighborhood market, where she sets up a cook fire and fries the tofu. She spends the whole afternoon at the market until she has sold all her tofu.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

The flag is raised at school at 6:45 a.m. Classes start at 7 a.m. I go home at noon and then classes start again at 3 p.m. Some days I do not have classes in the afternoon.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I walk to school. Some day I would like to have a bike so I could ride a bike to school. I usually meet friends along the way, and we walk together.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I eat lunch at home, because the school has a break from noon until 3 p.m. My favorite food is pâte with okra sauce.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

We speak French at school.
